- First the farmer cuts the rushes and gathers them off the field that he intends to dig. Then he scores the field and between every two cuts he scatters a ridge of manure. Then he comes along with a loy and digs it. This is much slower than coping with a plough. It takes a man a fortnight to dig a lee field. When he turns up a sod he digs the mould and throws it into the heart of the ridge which is called hearting.
