    In the famine years there lived a very charitable woman in the townland of Deerpark about 2 1/2 miles to the west of Lixnaw. She was a Mrs Quinlan (nee O'Connell) the wife a farmer. The farm was not very extensive and the family barely struggling for an existence. The farmer had put aside a bin of corn (oats) for seed to sow in the following spring.
    In that year of scarcety and hunger many beggars came to the door craving some food, and this good woman while she had anything suitable for food in the house could not find it in her heart to refuse them. She gave every beggar who came to her door a measure of the oats from the bin, and when the time approached for the seed sowing there was very little oats left in the bin. A day or two before the seed oats should be required for the sowing the poor woman left the house on some pretence or other and went to her own people afraid of the anger of her husband when he should find the bin all but empty. The day came for the sowing of the seed oats and when the man of the house went to open the bin to take out the seed oats he was surprised
