- The one thorn in the sides of the auxiliaries in this area was the 3rd West Cork Brigade locally known as the Column. It consisted of the young men who left their families, homes and occupations and set out to strike a blow for Ireland. In this column were men from all grades, farmers, students, labourers, West Cork men all loyal and staunch comrades equipped with arms and ammunition.
This column of fearless men was supported by the country people. Old and young alike gave all the assistance possible to the men who fought so bravely. The leader of the column was Tom Barry.
