    Old Schools
    Over eighty years ago there was a school master named Mr Halpin living in a small house on the top of the hill a little east of Ballyhahill bridge. In bad weather he taught in his own house but when the days were fine he took the scholars out beyond a hedge at the back of his house down into the glen. Each day a different boy was picked out to stand on the ditch and watch, lest the English should come on. In those days the soldiers wore red caps, so it was an easy matter to spot them far away. If they did come, the school was quickly broken up and master and all hurried to their homes without any delay. They never pretended that they were learning anything for they knew that they would be punished, once it was the policy of England to keep the Irish in ignorance. Somtimes this master went through the country and taught English and Mathematics in the farmers' houses. Here the same careful watch had to be kept for the soldiers. The neighbours' children were generally allowed to join in the classes. Writing was done on slate. The teacher remained in this district for about ten years. The pupils used to sit on the grass in the open air. There was another one of these schools in Turraree. There were also two in
