    Long ago Ireland was far more thickly populated than it is at present. The houses were far thicker also. Through the country the ruins of some of the old houses are to be seen. Long ago Ireland was divided into counties, baronies, parishes and townlands. My townland is Shyan and it got its name from forts and fairies. It is divided into upper and lower Shyan and it is the second biggest townland in the parish of Kilmihil. There are forty-six houses in the (parish) townland of Shyan six of them are slated and the rest thatched. There are the ruins of eight
