Yes, sir, three bags full:- One for the master and one for the dean And one for the little boy that cries down the lane" belongs to a much earlier period i.e. to the days of the tithes, when there was one bag for the landlord, one for the minister & the proctor and the remainder for the tenant and his family Some extraordinary penances were imposed on penitents in those days such as wearing a horse's collar for so many Sundays at the chapel gate, or appearing in a white sheet in front of the congregation

   The Parnell Split assumed very serious aspect in this parish of Tinryland. On one occasion a priest was threatened with a four graved fork at a meeting & the coffin of one "leader" ran unburried in the graveyard for a week. The curse wh. followed the Parnellites, at least the extreemest, was they had no sons, believe it or not . I don't imagine for a moment that the fact that many leading families had no male issue can be attributed to one's political views but as a folklorist I am simply recording what I heard et in medium reliquam with Tacitus of yore. The fact remains, however.
