  1. Long ago before national schools were built, school used to be held in barns.
    That kind of a school was called a hedge school, there was a hedge-school in my district, it was in a barn in the townland of Corlisland, a short distance from the present national school.
    It was a man that usually taught in the hedge-school, he taught school every day from ten o'clock until two, and if any of the pupils wanted to go home to do work during school hours, they would be let home any time. The teachers were not paid well, the children would bring a penny or twopence, whenever they would have it, some of them
