- The people long ago used to go to a barn school in Oldcastle Meelick Swinford and they were taught by Owen Máistigh. Owen used to teach them how to write and read the alphabet.
They wrote with a quill or a burned piece of bogdeal or the shank of a clay pipe. They had no blackboards but a large flag raised up against the wall. They had no seats but a block of a rough form made of timber from the wood. The master (and) used to wear a grey flannel waistcoat and knee breeches, long stockings and shoes. The children used to wear grey flannel petticoats and troicínís to keep the cold from their feet.
