- 30th May 1938The landlord of Carracastle was Sir William White. He had two other townlands also, Oughtoose and Carragowan. He lived in Dublin. It is not certain how he got that property. He never did any good for the people. Sometimes he gave them work and he paid them. The tenants had to work a few days for him for nothing. The rent was paid twice a year, to a man named Marmor who was the agent. The agent lived in Castlebar, and he had his office there. Anybody who was not able to pay the rent was put out of his house and land. The bailiff was John Durkan from Carrogowan. He used ot go round to the people with process. The people were afraid of him and they used to work for him. He sold his land about fifty or(continues on next page)
