- Long ago people done their own dyeing with moss. This moss grew on large stones and rocks and on the trunk of old trees. People went out and they gathered the moss in baskets, and brought it home and picked and cleaned it. Then they put it on to boil for a long time. When it was boiled they took it up and strained it. Then they put it again to boil, and put the clothes into it and let them boil for a long time. Then they put them out to dry. When the clothes were dry they were a nice golden brown.
