- Long ago there were no lamps or candles like we have now.
The only candles the people had were rush candles. The way they used to make them was, they first used to peel the skins off the rushes, and then they used to dip the ends of them in tallow.
They used to make candlesticks out of rods. They used to stick a rod in a sod of turf and splice the top of the rod, and then put the rush candle into it.
