The herbs used were Crub' Dearg and Hippo or Cranes Bill. These grow on a hard surface ground, as on firm fences. An equal quantity of these leaves are gathered and boiled and the water is then given to the cattle and it is a certain cure.
For scalds or sores in hoofs, common tar is poured between the claws one or twice and it is a certain cure.
To prevent butter from being taken from your cows, the following was and is still done in my district around Ballyduff.
At Easter get the Easter Water and keep until May Eve. Before noon on that day, go to a mountain ash tree and collect a number of its sprigs.
Make scolps of some and a little brush with the others. Put the Easter Water in a jug or any vessel. walk around by the boundary wall of your own farm and at the corners of each field, shake the(continues on next page)
