  1. Long ago there were schools called "Hedge Schools" in our district. One of the schools was held behind a hedge by a man named Arthur Lanford. He taught the children in a different place every day because he was afraid of the British soldiers. Arthur Lanford was a stranger to the people in our district.
    Another school of long ago was held in Mount Venus by a man named Matthew Sweeney. Matthew Sweeney was a workman. When he would start to teach in his own house at Mount Venus plenty of boys went to him to be taught. Mr Brown who lives in our district was one those who went.
    The children would bring ..every week for their teaching. The children had books to read from and copies to write on. They wrote on their copies with pen and pencil. And they also wrote on slates with chalks. When they would go to school they would be seated on stools, and some on blocks of wood around the blackboard. The blackboard that Matthew used he made....
