- In olden times the people of Kilcar were not so clever as they are now. There were no teachers in the district. A man from Kilcar took a notion he would go to Glasgow. He asked his father for four pounds. He said he would be no more than a week away and when he returned he would give the money back and as much more along with it. It took a good part of one of the pounds to take him to Glasgow. He tried to think how to convert the other three pounds into a thousand pounds.
When he landed he went into a beer shop and got a bottle of beer. He handed the man in the bar a pound and told him to keep the change till he would come back. "How do I know you when I come back" said the bartender. I will put my hand to my hat and say "Do you twig the old hat" was the reply. "That will be all right" said the bartender.
The same transaction and the same conversation took place in a second and in a third beer shop.
He then went to a great shop kept by a rich Jew. The Jew asked him did he want(continues on next page)- Collector
