Coals from the bonfire are carried by members of the family through the different fields. This will ensure a good crop.
Oidche Samhna.
Feasting on apples & nuts by the children. Apples are hung on cord from roof or placed in basin of water. Children then try to bite without using hands. Cabbage heads are pulled by young men and thrown at doors of neighbours from whom they expect to "get a chase".
Cabbage stalks are scooped out and live coal put in centre. Damp hay is plugged in at both ends. Next a stout long stick is placed horizontally across the doors of the house. To the stick the latch is tied by a piece of rope. The door cannot then be opened from inside. Now the(continues on next page)
