  1. Our landlord about 40 years ago was a man called the Earl of Arran.
    His ancestors were landlords before him and he was the last of them. He himself lived in London and had agents here working for him. These agents lived in Deelcastle, which is situated mid-way between Ballina and Crossmolina, and collected the rents for him. He used to come to Deelcastle twice a year for pleasure and sport.
    The land belonged to the landlord until about some thirty years ago when the Irish Land Commission purchased it.
    Lord Arran was not a cruel or unjust landlord. If the people had not the money
