    To fight before I’d die,
    My pocket-pistol I drew forth,
    And at him I let fly;
    I fired a great big volley, boys,
    That pierced him through the heart,
    I let him have another one
    Before that he did part.

    Carey’s wife and son came
    To the cabin where he lay,
    Seeing him lying in his gore
    It filled them with dismay;
    “O’Donnell, you’ve shot my husband,”
    Mrs. Carey she did say;
    “I did, indeed, in my own defence
    To save my life,” said I.

    The captain had me hand-cuffed
    And in strong irons bound,
    He handed me over as prisoner
    When I landed in Cape Town;
    They brought me back to London
    Till my trial day came on,
    And I am kept in London jail
    Awaiting my fearsome doom.
