- Long ago there was a hedge school in this district. The school was situated three and a half miles from Derry. On hot days they were taught in the open. The school was built with sods and clay. The roof was of rushes.
It was a strange teacher who taught in the school. His name was Mr. O'Brian. There was no school carried on in the farmers houses.
The subjects taught were:- writing, reading and catechism. They did not learn Irish. They wrote with pen and slate. The blackboard they used was a big flat stone. The teacher did not remain long in the district.- Collector
