- Potatoes are grown on Mr. Brides farm. About four acres of land is sown under potatoes each year. So years the amout varies.Mr. Bride prepares the ground. The ground is not manured in any way before being turned up. The potatoes are sown in drills. A plough is used. Wooden ploughs were used long ago. Iron ploughs are used now.The local people help one another by preparing the ground and by helping to sow the potatoes.Potatoes are hoes in May and June. After tha they are moulded. They are sprayed in July and August. Theydig the potatoes in Autumn with a potato digger. The people pick them with their hands from the earth. They put them into a basket. The potatoes are stored in pits.The names of the local potatoes are: Kerrs Pinks, Arn Victors, Ruby Queens, King Edwards, Suttons, Arn-Banners. Kerrs Pinks and Arn-Banners grow best i the district. Potatoes were used instead of starch.
