In the early Summer morning many people used to go to the shore to collect this vegetable in buckets. They did not use it all themselves, but sent it away to other places and got money for it.
One old lady living in Buncrana at present - an old age pensioner - remembers herself accompanying her Aunt to the shore every day to collect this sloke to send it to London.
The money she obtained from the sale of the sloke was her Aunt's only income for at those times the old needy people had no pension.
