- The Ballinamona Card HouseThere was an old empty house in Ballinamona belonging to an old man called McDermot. It was on the roadside beside Walsh's house. The neighbours played cards there regularly.
Old Pat McNulty who now lived in a Labourers' Cottage at Ballinamona, went one night, years ago, to light the candle and put down the fire for the cardplayers.
A black man came in as he was putting down the fire. The black man left a pack of cards down on the table and asked him to play. McNulty got afraid and rushed for the door, but the door closed on him. He managed to open the door and run home. They never played cards there after that.Charlie Gallagher of Carrickmagrath told this story to his sons. They, Patrick John and Francie, told it to me. The father heard the story from Pat McNulty, the man who went to set up the card house for the nights' play. This was supposed to have happened over 30 years ago. The old card house is now down but the track of the house can be seen plainly behind Walsh's house. The bit of land which goes with the old card house now belongs to the McDermots who live in the first Labourers cottage (old cottage). They are descendants of old McDermot who told the story to Gallagher.- Collector
