All the houses long ago were small.
There was a kitchen at one end of the house and two rooms at the other end.At that time all the houses were thatched and there were no slated houses in the locality.The houses were thatched with wheaten straw or sedge.They grew the wheaten straw themselves and they found the sedge in boggy land. On the top of the thatch there were bobbens and these bobbens prevented the rain from coming on the top of the roof. There was usually a settle bed in the kitchen and some of the young people of the family used to sleep there.If there were any old people in the house they often took a rest in the settle bed during the day.The houses were made or stones and mortar but where stones were not to be found they(continues on next page)- Collector
