once a week. This was done in a big field near Kilchrest which was afterwards called "The stirabout field".
The people could be seen going with cans for the stirabout. But sometimes the people had not enough of food in the stirabout and they went into the churchyard in Kilchrest and they cut down the nettles. Those nettles were boiled in salt and water and were eaten by the people Many of them died and many others went to America.
It was in those days also the soup schools were made of which there was one in Castledaly. Soup was distributed in those schools but when they went to them they had to become Protestants. Those people were called "perverts".
