owns the candle that is the last to burn out will be the last to die.
On St. Martin's Day everyone kills a cock and sprinkles the blood of it around the four corners of the house. This is done in honour of St. Martin.
On St. John's night there is a bonfire lit at every cross-roads and while the fire is blazing the boys and girls dance around it. When the fire has died away they all leave the cross-roads and they go home. This fire is lit in honour of St. John because he was burned to death.
On Hallowe'en night the children have great fun. First they hand an apple from the ceiling. Then with their hands tied behind their backs they try to bite it. They put another in a tub of water and they also try to bite it with their hands behind their backs. Then they get saucers. They put clay in one, water in another and a ring in the third. It is said that if you put your hand in the saucer that had the clay you would die, and if you put your hand in the water you would go on a voyage, and if your put your hand on the ring you would get married. When all these games were played they begin playing blind-mans-buff until it is time to go to bed.
