- The roofs of the houses long ago were all thatched. The thatch was procured from straw and rye which was grown on all farms. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen which was placed beside the wall. and was called the outshot There was two apartments kitchen and room with some of the poor people they kept two or three cows tied at the end of the kitchen. The chimneys were made of stone and mortar but were very low. The windows were very small and the floors were made of clay. Half doors were very common long ago but are gone(continues on next page)
