- (continued from previous page)Rushes; The rushes were left in the grease until it was stiff. There was a green piece left on the rush. When they were long enough in the grease, they were put away to dry.Candles were also made by melting resin in a small iron vessel called a "com". When it was melted, it was left to cool. It was then rolled into a candle shape and a wick was placed in it.A washing custom: The old people used to gather wild ferns, get a flat stone and burn them on it. the ashes were then gathered into a box and put in the water when washing the linen. Dying: The old people used moss as a brown dye and sorrel as a green dye.Thatching: Thatching was and is yet done in this district. Straw is used for dwelling houses. Rushes are sometimes used for byres. The old straw and dirt is first scraped down Scollop are used to prevent the thatch from falling off.(continues on next page)
