    He took his sledge and the door he mangled
    And he bade defiance to all within.

    He showed how proudly his Irish bosom
    Did thus ignore what they tried to do
    He loved old Erin from his tender boyhood
    O God be with you, P.A. McHugh

    On the hills of Geevagh where waged the landwar
    We heard his voice both loud and high
    "Yes, seize the land and drive out the cattle"
    Was what he told us then to try

    He travelled Ireland with the Geevagh prisoners
    Through courts and dungeon, when friends were few
    But in return, we can only mourn
    And pray for glory for our own McHugh
