- Long ago in this district the houses were all thatched, with the exception of a few slated ones. They were thatched with rushes, corn straw, and wheat-straw, and some people thatched with heather.
The old houses had a bed in the kitchen, and it was placed in a corner one side of the fire. It was called a settle-bed.
The fire-place was not always at the gable but it was at the side-wall. The chimneys were made of stone and mortar.
Sometimes the houses had windows without glass. They used sheep's skin instead. Old floors were made of cement.
