When it was thrashed the oats were put through stones which had an axle. These stones were called "querns." When it was ground, it was sold to neighbours or used by themselves.
About seventy to a hundred years ago, men, and women also, used to go out through the country purchasing bull calves at the age of one or two days, buying at the rate of one to two shillings per head. Then after killing them they used to sell the veal at eightpense a quarter (of the calf).
