He covered the crock of gold with his coat and took to the fields home for he was afeard anyone would meet him on the road and mabe take the crock from him. He had to pass Cloonaquin wood, where he had seen the quare old hag of a woman who told him about the crock of gold when he was going to Manorhamilton, and here he was going home again without the powder which he promised to give her to rub on her cheeks and make her look like a lovely young lady again. Paidin was too much afraid to venture up the town to buy the powder for the cow for fear that anyone might take the crock of gold from him. He was hoping that the ould hag would not be in the wood or see him going home of him, so he stole quietly through the wood and when Paidin thought that he was past her safely didn't he hear the most terrible yell from the old woman in the wood you ever heard, for him to give her the powder or else to bring back the crock of gold. With that Paidin took to his heels and ran like the very divil across fields and(continues on next page)
