The best known of the families in this district are the Heaney's and the Mc. Donaghs.
Before a fair in the village a band of them arrive, and in the early part of the day, they go through the streets selling cans, rugs, carpets, mirrors and pictures. The women carry the young children in shawls on their backs, and the bigger children run around asking money. Both men and women drink, and in the evenings a row commences between to tinkers themselves, some of the people in the town gather round and enjoy them. The guards arrest them and put them in the barracks.
