In summer ropes are made from hay, and are used for putting on “rucks” and “ricks” of hay to keep them from being blown away by the wind.The hay that the ropes are made from must be long and rough or else they will break easily. They are twisted with a hook or “twister” (made from strong wire and wood), while one person “spins” the hay into the correct thickness.Some people do not make any ropes but buy then in the shop-these are called hemp ropes and are much stronger, and last longer than the hay ropes.When the poorer people(continues on next page)- Collector
