- Long ago there was no such thing as dye to be got in the shops or even until this present century.
When the people wanted to colour clothes - generally woolen goods - they used to go out and gatherold grey sort of moss off the stones that would not be stirred for perhaps half a century.
When a sufficient amount was gathered it was brought in and washed to free it from sand.
Then it was put into a large pot containing some water and was boiled.
When boiling for about two hours the liquid became dark in colour.
