- The estate of Kilmorna which is at the southern side of this parish, contained about 500 acres of land before it was divided in 1927. It was owned by the O'Mahonys, who were Anglo-Irish. The river Feale flows gently through the land. The owner had a beautiful house there. One day an English visitor was at the "GreatHouse" and one of the workmen asked him to come and have a swim in the river. The workman was well able to swim and he said to the English man, "I able to swim". The english man did not understand him at first, and he answered, "Did you ever learn etymology?" But as he said this he was going down for he was not able to swim. The Irish man seeing him go down said: "No but you never learned swiminology".
