- The old houses long ago were thatched and the fire was in the East end of the house and the dressing with the shining stone of delph was on the other end. Near this hearth a bed called a settle-bed used to be paced and it cold be made into a bed at night and served as a form by day. The working men of the farm slept in the settle-bed.
