  1. John James Doherty of Annaghearley, Kilclare told me that there was a hedge school in this district. This school was originally a very old house and was built near the roadside at Kilclare, Gowel, Co. Leitrim. A stranger whose name was Mr. Tricker taught there. He went from house to house for lodgings. The subjects taught there were reading, writing and arithmetic. It is supposed to be the same house which was since rebuilt and it now used as a byre.
