   The Eel which made the bed of the Shannon "A great eel once lived in the Shannon pot. When he heard that St. Patrick was coming to Ireland and that he would banish all snakes from the land he decided to make his way to the sea. He started burrowing and he had very little trouble until he came to Jamestown, there (?) hard rock was on every side of him and he had to make a wide circum (?) to avoid it. That is why there is a curious bend on the Shannon the When he came to Athlone he rested in a hole. A piper came next and began to play music. The eel bewitched him and he went down to the hole and began to play. Next day people heard the music, but soon the eel ate him up. This hole is called the Piper's hole.
