    to get license from the Guards before they can have a raffle. Nearly everybody used to raffle something, coming up to the Christmas, and they would then have plenty of money to buy their requirements. They would invite all the girls from around the countryside, and they would not have to pay anything; but then all the boys would have to pay a shilling each and in that way they people would make a lot of money.
