The Wild Geese come to this district from the Highlands of Scotland about the end of October. They fly across this area on their way to the Shannon. Their coming is a sure sign that Winter has arrived, and that we are going to have severe rain and snow storms. The people living near the Shannon are always watching their movements. They say that if the Wild geese leave the Shannon and come to the shore it is a sure sign of a coming storm as they always seek shelter in advance of a storm. They return again to Scotland in April and there build their nests and rear their young during the Summer months. Their departure from here indicates that the storms of Winter and Spring are over and that we may hope for fine weather.
