    selected, and put standing in the clay cake. They are then lighted in honour of the twelve Apostles and each member of the family selects one candle while the Rosary is being recited. The candle which dies or burns out first is a sign that the owner will be the first to die in the family; and the candle which lasts longest is a sign of a long life for the owner.
    When the candles have all burned out the cake of clay which held them in position is put in the roof of the byre or cow shed. It is regarded as a lucky object to keep near the animals until the following year when another cake replaces it.
