- A man named John Tiernan taught the last hedge school in Gleneaskey. It is sixty-eight years ago.
He had a horse to bring him to school. The scholars had to bring a quart of oats or a penny a day. He did not live in the locality. At the time teaching was against English law and as the Glen could only be entered by paths along the river it was a choice place in which to escape being noticed.
This teacher taught English, Irish and Arithmetic. The books were written by hand and portions had each day to be copied from a blackboard and learnt for the next day.- Collector
