The protest seized Mac Morrough's mule by the bridle and tried to drag the mule and its rider into the graveyard. Twice he succeeded in pulling the mule partly through the gate but on each occasion the mule refused to go further. The protestant made a third attempt to get the mule inside saying at the same time to Mac Morrough that if he go him once inside he would never come out. This time just as it appeared to Mac Morrough that the mule would be pulled through the gate the loud crowing of a cock from the neighboring farmyard was heard. Immediately the cock crew the hold on the bridle was released and both the protestant and his horse disappeared.
Mac Morrough rode home safely but never again did he venture to pass the graveyard after nightfall.
