    were washed out.
    Next the cloth was dried and dyed according to whatever purpose it was wanted for. It was dyed russet brown with madder for the making of quilts and the thread was doubled for knitting stockings.
    Drugged petticoats of two colours - usually red and blue - were also made. They were a mixture of flax and wool - that is the weft was of wool, and the warp was of flax.
    For frieze : - The wool was dyed blue-black or grey with [?] before it was spun.
    When the thread was woven it was sent to the thickening mill where it was thickened and pressed. Then the tailor made overcoats, bodycoats etc. of frieze. Thirty or forty years ago wool was spun and woven locally into quilts, blankets, flannels, frieze, and thread for stockings.
