    There was once, in the parish of Riverstown an old couple named John and Mary Cairns who bought a cow at Collooney fair from a Protestant man named Lawson.

    her hands and shouting, "Oh John boy but the devil is strong in her yet" thinking it was the Holy Water that caused the cow to act thus. It was some hours afterwards, when she learned the true cause which was as follows. The neighbouring boy that she sent for the Holy Water, had brought a bottle of vinegar in mistake and it was the vinegar in mistake old Mary poured into the cows ears instead of the Holy Water.
