- Long ago the people used to have small houses made of mud, stones, and straw. Some of them used to be thatched with rushes, and others were straw. They used to have a little bed. In some of the old houses these little beds are still to be seen. They used to have the fire in the gable of the house. I have never heard of anyone having the fire in the middle of the kitchen. Some of the people used to have only one window and no glass in it. The greater part of the people used to have half doors, and some of them are still to be found. It is mostly turf and wood they use for the fires. The people used to have rush candles to show them light when they needed it. Candles were made locally.
