    up member of the family might be seen stretched on some straw near them with the head of a calf resting on his arm, and the "parent cow slumbering at his feet". The smoke which had no means of escape but the door, was so thick that a visitor who came to the door would have to run away, but it apparently seemed to have no effect on the inmates. All this is so altered that would have to seek in vain for the counterpart of the scene.
