- (continued from previous page)in the walls. As a rule the cows are tied at the gable ends of the house with a channel separating the cows tied at one gable from those tied at the other. However in the case of a rich farmer a large plank runs horizontally from gable to gable along one side wall. Stout timber stakes are driven well into the ground and stand erect some few inches from the wall. An iron ring to which is attached a strong chain or rope can move freely up and down the stake. This chain is passed around the cow's neck and securely fastened by passing a hook through one of the links.Patrick Benson,
