- (continued from previous page)The teachers used to sit in the middle of the house and the pupils around the house. The teachers had a stool or chair, I dont think the pupils had either. Some of these pupils were 20 years and over. I dont know if the teacher had a blackboard, but the pupils had pencils made by themselves in the pencil quarries. I dont think the three schools were going on together or the teachers were at the same time.
- There was an old hedge-school in a field at the top of Ranalough and some years later the class removed into an uninhabited house where the old forge stands now. It was taught by a man by the name of Mr Rallins who is supposed to be a native of Scataglin.He used to go a night with each of his scholars and this was his payment.
