    the potatoes cannot be dug with a plough, but men have to dig them with spades. These are made at the local forge owned by Baltie Cronin and are shaped thus
    There are several varities of potatoes used in this district namely, Irish Queens, Champions, Kerr Pinks Arran Banners. The latter grow best for cattle and I. Queens are best for table. The champion is better for table use but does not grow so well here about.
    Potatoes were often used instead of starch.
