  1. A man once went on a visit to a house after dark, and on going home he had to cross some fields with a gap in one of them. When coming to the gap he seemed to see, what he thought to be a big tall man. The nearer he came the taller it got, and he felt the hair stand on his head, but taking courage he said, ''Whether man or devil down you come''. But to his surprise it was a big ragweed.
    Mrs Jones had got a new maid and her mistress told her to go to the shop for two pounds of bacon. The maid asked her if she would ask for belly bacon. The mistress replied that she was for nice streaky bacon
